The Science Behind Motivation

Post image for The Science Behind Motivation

by Jk Allen

There’s a constant battle to generate and maintain motivation. For some, being motivated is a natural part of life – presenting minimal challenge to grab and maintain. But for others, motivation is hard to come by – making goals extremely hard to achieve. This article is about understanding the science behind motivation to better understand how we achieve, maintain, and even lose it.

Motivation: The Science

Motivation is the willingness to act on something or for something. At its core, it’s the drive to fulfill our basic needs to obtain pleasure, avoid pain, and drives the energy in which we work at fulfilling these fundamental needs. Motivation is triggered by emotional and social influence and fuels our actions and drive.

Motivation encompasses 3 components:

  1. Activation – The decision to initiate a certain behavior. You decided to read this article.
  2. Persistence – Is maintaining effort in achieving something. You continue to read this article to learn more about motivation.
  3. Intensity – Is the energy that goes into obtaining a goal. You are driven to learn more about motivation so you extend your learning’s on this subject outside of this article.

The types of Motivation

Intrinsic. These are the motivations that arise directly within the individual; influenced by no external forces. These motivations involve things that give us personal satisfaction or pleasure. We are motivated to do things that intrinsically motivate us regardless of any physical rewards.

Extrinsic. These are the motivations that ensue from beyond an individual level and often involve physical rewards. These motivations give us drive to complete tasks, mainly for the reward; whether it is monetary or recognition. Extrinsic motivations justify the reason we work hard on tasks, even when we have no interest, beyond the reward.

Self Motivation

Self motivation is the internal force that drives us to achieve goals. It’s the fire within us that craves for development and yearns for progress. Its self motivation that keeps us driven when faced with obstacles and pushes us to initiate new goals.

Why we Lose Motivation

It’s a struggle to stay motivated; we frequently face bouts of uncertainty, inaction and dwindled courage. The ability to retain motivation is a separating factor between winners and losers; winners have the ability find a way to progress, while losers can’t move forward. We all face the fight of losing motivation, but we all have the power to overcome it.

Knowledge is Power

Understanding the mechanics behind how motivation is achieved, maintained and loss gives you control over the management of your very own motivation. Being motivated is an option and the choice is up to you.

3 tips to enhance your motivational levels:

  1. Don’t totally rely on finding motivation from one source. You should identify many things that give you the drive to advance forward in your quest to achieve goals.
  2. Motivation is a choice. You have the decision to choose between being motivated, and not.
  3. Think positive thoughts. Try being totally positive as much as you can and experience the self motivation that you create.

I’m motivated to protect myself from mediocrity. Averageville isn’t an area I want to dwell. But bigger than myself, I have a family; wife and children. With this comes a natural and constant flow of motivation. I’m motivated by the simple fact that I know everything I do isn’t for me; it’s for those who depend on me and see me as a role model. I’m motivated to honor my responsibilities – I’m driven to serve my family.

Are you motivated? What motivates you and how do you maintain it?

We naturally let motivation happen without putting thought to it. But imagine the power we can consume by understanding how motivation works for you.

Very wise offering Jk. I particularly love the advice of not just getting motivation from one source. We don’t eat just the same food or drink the same liquids or spend all day in one place so if we are multi motivated we will have a permanent breeze behind our backs and a buzz running through our veins that prevents ennui. Great work and love the energy you’ve injected into this.

John – I like your point, “we don’t just eat the same food or drink the same liquids…” Very true. Just as our bodies need multiple sources of nutrients…we also need multiple sources of motivation. Thanks

JK ,

This was outstanding. I have never looked at motivation from an intrinsic and extrinsic perspective.

Currently I am motivated. The fact that my behavior and work ethic effects the lives of many helps me maintain my focus. If I run out of gas my family goes hungry. Purpose is my greatest motivation. So whenever I need a “shot” of motivation I put my challenges in the proper perspective.

Frank – Perspective of life is my main form of motivation as well. Within that perspective, and topping the list is my family. Other things such as Time are also in there. I say time because it’s limited, we never know how much we have left. Thanks for the comment.

hi jk
how are you?
you’ve touched on an subject because when one looks at the economy, job cuts or losses, life difficulties etc. it’s enough to make one lose motivation or lose the will to push forward.
i loved the distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
you are quite right when you talk on the ability of retaining motivation distinguishing the winners from the losers.
i also subcribe to the notion that positive thoughts or optimism present individuals with the options to choose actions or steps that would fuel motivation.
take care and enjoy the rest of the day.

Ayo – I’m great, I hope the same for you.

I’m intrigued as to what biological factors really ignite from simple positive thoughts and optimism. I can personally say that it works for me…but I’m super curious now to know if there have been any solid studies on this very subject. Maybe down the roads my findings can institute a part 2!
Thanks for the comment!

Hi JK! Very informative post. I like that you point out that motivation is a choice. I totally agree. We can be self-motivated if we choose that route. When we make this choice, the intensity of the motivation goes up because it’s intrinsically fueled.

Thanks for a great post! Loving blessings!

Andrea- Since we have a choice in the matter…we might as well be motivated! Thanks for stopping by.

Hi JK,

Very nice post on motivation. One of the best ways to stay motivated is to keep focusing on the end result and the benefits that we will get. This is what I usually do and it works very well with me. Thanks for sharing

Dia – I agree, seeing that end goal helps keep me on track too. Sometimes I need an extra boost, however; hence I set small goals which point toward a larger one. This helps me measure my rate of success and feel some victory along the way!
Peace.

Thanks JK,

I’m glad you mentioned the two main types of motivation. I think they are both incredibly useful depending on our personality and what it is we are trying to achieve. I find extrinsic motivation is great for motivating me to do mundane and tedious tasks, while intrinsic motivation is best for more creative and purposeful action.

Keep it up with the blog.

Steve – I to see extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in the same light. In the past though, I wasn’t aware of the actual types – I just had the feeling. Peace.

JK: Great post filled with some really good information. I agree with what you said about really being able to understand the components of motivation and all the different types so that you can know how to tap into your motivation when you want to. It can definitely be challenging to stay continually motivated and I really appreciated your advice to tap into the different types of motivation. That really is a good point. Thanks for passing it along.
