Self-Branding: Your Personal Slogan

Post image for Self-Branding: Your Personal Slogan

by Jk Allen

YOU ARE A BRAND. Just like a corporation, you have the ability to create and maintain others perception of you.

In its traditional meaning, slogan refers to a descriptive catchphrase that describes the identity of something. Typically, slogans are used for advertising purposes to describe a product; the benefits or competitive advantage.

Personal Slogan + Hustler’s Perspective = description of who you are; your values, strengths, and passion.

A personal slogan is for you; a motivational tool, reminder and personal directive to keep you focused on your goals.

A slogan is a repetitive expression of an idea or identity.

Think about it

Your slogan = repetition of your idea and/or identity…based on your own agenda. We’re constantly bombarded with slogans; created for the benefit of driving business sales. Being that you’re a brand, it’s to your benefit to focus on building a consistent structure that you can easily define. I understand that we all have complexities that can’t be trapped into miniature descriptions, but just like a business, we should be able to find a simple, yet powerful way to state the basis of our identity.

Here are a few popular business slogans that you’ve likely heard before:
Just Do It (Nike), Have It Your Way (Burger King), You’re In Good Hands (All State), Taste Great Less Filling (Miller), Breakfast of Champions (Wheaties), I’m Lovin’ It (McDonalds), Melts in your Mouth Not In Your Hands (M&Ms).

My Personal Slogan

Disclaimer: I share this with you only for example purposes. I recommend that your slogan be a phrase that you draw motivation from; a reminder about what you’re about. While it doesn’t have to be held exclusive from others, unlike a business slogan, your personal slogan should be all about you.

STRATEGY |  HUSTLE |  RESULTS

Let me explain in detail what this means to me…

STRATEGY. I’m strategic in my approach; planning with the goal of putting myself in the best possible position for successful outcomes.
HUSTLE. Hustle represents the intensity in which I operate; high energy, efficiency, and good old fashion hard work. Hence, iHustle.
RESULTS. I’m driven to achieve a certain outcome or result. I don’t do it for the heck of it.

I remind myself of this constantly. In fact, the picture above is an actual picture taken in my in-home fitness room (of course minus the digital effects). Every morning I see the gigantic letters stretching across the wall directly above my dumbbell rack – reminding me to work harder and smarter than my competition.

When people walk into this area, the first thing they see is my personal slogan. I don’t jump out and say – “that’s my slogan” – but if they ask about it (which generally happens) I explain to them, just as I did above. Often I get the simple:”that’s cool”, or they give me the look like “you’re crazy – who are you to have your own slogan”. I welcome both, honestly. Because for me, it’s about the constant reminder that keeps me motivated. It is not about having a fancy catchphrase to impress people.

Development of a Personal Slogan

There’s no right or wrong method to this. Since your personal slogan is all about you, it should be an easy task. Instead of making your slogan complex, make it simple – based on a more complex formula.

Here are a some tips on developing your personal slogan:

  • Be simple. I can’t stress this one enough. You want this to be something so simple that you can always remember it.
  • Define your long term goals. Think about the long term goals that you want to reach and the way(s) you’re going to go about achieving them. Simplify the actions you identify and incorporate those into your personal slogan.
  • Be creative. You want your slogan to attract and motivate you – so be creative in your approach by using words that keep you interested.
  • Brand awareness. Just like a company, identify the basis of your brand…is it intelligence, hard word, finesse (mine is ‘hustle’)…again, in a simplified fashion, incorporate the basis of your brand into your personal slogan.
  • Keep “you” in mind. Incorporate words that describe your strengths, values and or passions.

You might have gotten the hint by now…keep it simple! Your personal slogan is YOUR PERSONAL SLOGAN; created specifically for you – by you.

The Conclusion

In my article The Science Behind Motivation I wrote about finding motivation from your own sources. I provided the example that I’m motivated by the fact that I have people who depend on me; my family. Amongst many other things, I pull motivation from my personal slogan. It’s a constant reminder to stay on track because I’ve planned my route, to work hard, work smart and to keep my eyes on the prize.

View your personal slogan as a formula: no matter the complexity of a formula, it’s generally simple in script…it’s the solution that is complex.

JK, great questions my friend. After all we do walk this Earth as ourselves so how do we make up? What captures who we are?
For me, I call it as this: ‘I am the John and only’.
Works for me as I like the vibe.

Jk,

I don’t have a personal slogan. Never thought of using one. I have done positive affirmations in the past but they just made me feel weird. Making a personal slogan is a great idea that I will employ immediately. Any suggestions? I am thinking sleep, eat, slack but that one I think will reduce my productivity. lol

Frank – you thing you must do is incorporate your humor and drive. Those are two things I know that you have for sure! Thanks man!

Hi JK! Great point. As bloggers, it’s important to define our brand and stick to it. My brand is happiness and I’d say my slogan is my blog’s by-line “life served sunny side up.” That’s what life is all about for me, happiness with the sun always shining.

Thanks for the inspirational post. Loving blessings!

Personal slogans are powerful ways of identifying ourselves. My personal slogan is, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” This reminds me constantly that I am marvelously made and destined to win at whatever I set my mind to. Nike is destined to win at selling shoes, and Burger King at selling burgers (because that is what those folks set their mind to … and their slogan reminds them of that). Nice blog, Jk. If a thousand people declare that wrong is right – they suffer from that wrongness. What if a thousand people declare that right is right (because they create a personal slogan that supports that right declaration)? hmmm.

Rob – You made excellent points. And I mean excellent. Thanks for driving home the point at hand. I really do think about my slogan all the time. The more I put focus to it, the better my outcome. I remind myself what I want, how I’m going to go about getting it – and when I’m able to seriously focus on this – I get. I can’t really explain the science behind that – but it works! Thank you, Rob.

hello jk
how are you?
our identity is quite important. people relate to us, hire us, make friends with us, work with us… based on our personality, attitude, skills, strengths and at times weakness. I feel some of these factors if not all constitute our make up which define who we are.
our slogan embodies what makes us tick!! and at times having a slogan is instrumental to driving or motivating us eg. i am fighter not a quitter for example.
take care ane enjoy the rest of the day

Hi Ayo – yes, our identity is quite important. We can have identity and know our identity without having a slogan of course – but having a personal slogan and setting out mind to it helps to ensure that you retain motivation and a thorough understanding of who we think we are. Thanks Ayo.

Hi JK,

Nice post my friend. Personal slogan is important as it distinguishes us from others. This is how people know and relate to us. I have to think for one for myself. Thanks for sharing

Personal brands and slogans take on new meaning whenever you interact with customers. They are symbols/concepts that represent big chunks of information. That is why I like the idea of developing a “business culture.” Everything you do and say should reflect your values as a business. Everything should be congruent with your brand. It’s more than just a logo on your site or even a 5-word slogan – it’s an attitude or an aura.

Great advice as usual JK.

Since we have the ability to create out own image (our brand) – we might as well make it the best image that we can.
Thanks for the timely comment.

Intriguing. Do you think we should treat our personal slogan like our tag line in our blogs? Or it should be something deeper, like a real personal slogan, applying to our inner identity? Just got in a philosophical mood after reading your post :)

Cheers,

Ruben

JK: I think this is great advice. There is always going to be so much going on around us and we are always going to need to remind ourselves of what we believe in and how we want to apply ourselves to whatever comes our way. I think having an easy to recall and follow slogan makes perfect sense. Thanks for the recommendation. I am a fan of your slogan and I can see it at work with your blog :)

Hi JK,
I really enjoyed this article. I agree we need to really think about what we stand for and the message we’re projecting on our sites.

My blog is about teaching others to rely more on their inner guidance, or intuition, so my slogan is: Creating Success From the Inside-Out.

Nice one JK, very true and useful. A personal slogan is like your compass for living. Without one, I doubt if your life will really make much of a sense. Having one is simply the difference between winners and losers, because why losers quit, you continue because there is something within that keeps reminding and motivating you to urge on.

I have one, I’m sure you know already what it is -SIGNIFICANCE: be different [uniqueness] and make a difference [usefulness].

Since I married a much older man, people think I am nuts. As a result, my husband nicknamed me “Fruitcake.” For a college class I have to create a personal slogan and that is actually how I found this website. I think my slogan will be “Fruitcake- pretty on the outside and nutty on the inside.” What do you guys think???

As I am constantly learning to brand myself a little bit better every single day; this was a awesome post to add to my lesson on the topic, Jk.

It’s so important, so simple; yet there are so many people that are amiss to this fact. When reading about branding you rarely ever find any mention of slogans. It’s as important, I think as branding itself.

My personal slogan isn’t one that I use on my blog, but I do have a slogan on my blog. My personal slogan is, Dee-one and only. Simple, but to the point. My slogan on my blog has always been the name, but what I learned here is that isn’t enough. On the new site though, it’s very much clear and to the point.

I really am glad I journeyed through the archives and found this gem. It’s of great importance to where I am in my journey right now. Thanks for sharing it, my friend. Also, for dropping some mad knowledge into my branding logic. :)
