I believe that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than others hold us to. The level we set for ourselves should be beyond the general benchmarks set for the status quo: which is mediocrity. Doing this offers the ability to define our own success and directly impact all results that we aspire to achieve. Personally, I do this by Giving ONE-TEN; doing things with the definite purpose of being positioned with excellence by exuding high value.
What is ONE-TEN?
ONE-TEN is producing at a level that surpasses general expectations. ONE-TEN calls for you to elevate your expected value to an even higher value. This isn’t based on a request, but an internal drive.
Why use the formula: to position yourself with excellence. Performing at a high level offers the opportunity to receive recognition, financial reward, credibility, respect and freedom of time, amongst many other things.
The ONE-TEN Formula
It’s simple…
=Meet external expectations. This yields 100% because you totally fulfill the expected production that others had of you. You provided the value that was expected of you.
=Now exceed external expectations by going the extra mile, or extra 10%. This yields an additional 10% gain. You elevated your worth (value) by increasing your offering.
When executed with precision, you reach the mark of ONE-TEN, or 110%.
I told you the formula was simple! The execution, however, isn’t easy. It requires more work. It’s certainly not the easy route – but it is the route to progression.
The Development
ONE-TEN is an attitude based concept that I derived after realizing that when I exceed expectations and produce exceptional work, the doors of opportunity swing wide open.
I learned this as a teenager, although I didn’t practice it consistently. It wasn’t until adulthood that I began playing with the concept on a more consistent basis. And today, it’s a part of my daily make up. Sure there are times when I just don’t feel the hunger to excel, but overall, it’s become who I am.
I’m a high performer because I understand that in order for me to reach my goals and shed the realm of mediocrity, I must give my best and continue to increase my performance.
The Benefit
Producing with this formula in mind and reaching the heightened mark gives me the ability to do things my way (of course, to a degree) – even in a structured corporate environment. Why? Because I surpass the expectations set for me. This positions me in a category of excellence making me a valuable asset; a position shared by only a few. Most people aren’t willing to go the extra mile, which makes progress easier for the super-achiever-type personality.
I believe you have the opportunity to define the benefits that you’d like to receive. But to do so, you first have to present yourself in a way that makes you a valuable asset. Giving ONE-TEN is a means to help drive that goal.
Can You Ask Others to Give ONE-TEN
The quest to achieve excellence comes from one’s own personal desire. Everyone doesn’t harbor the hunger to excel; in fact most people don’t, although everyone IS capable. With this in mind, asking 110% of someone is setting the bar at an unreasonable level. 100% is the mark that should be set, and even then, many won’t reach that mark.
Production beyond 100% is based on one’s internal drive to achieve greatness.
I’ve found that on average, most people aren’t willing to put in the work to achieve at a high level. Yes, everyone is capable, but capability and desire are two different things. Some just don’t know that they have the ability to be excellent, and I’ve been commissioned to personally reduce that number within my lifetime.
Just as it’s improper to ask someone to lose weight, you shouldn’t ask for someone to give ONE-TEN. Both have to be decided upon based on internal desires for self satisfying reasons. Set the bar for others at 100%, and gift them with the motivation to exceed to ONE-TEN.
The Challenge
If you don’t believe the benefits that come with setting your own personal bar higher than what is expected of you – then give it a shot. Challenge yourself to adopt this formula for one month and I’m certain you’ll find that increasing your performance (value), will increase the value you receive back. It’s a reap and sow relationship.
Giving ONE-TEN is surpassing the mark of expectation; delivering an exceeding ratio of both quantity and quality.
Distinguish yourself from mediocrity by giving ONE-TEN; elevate your value and receive elevated value in return. ONE-TEN creates a win/win situation – join the game!
Q: Many of you already use this method…do you agree that it sets you apart from mediocrity and offers rewards that we all reach for? Or, do you find that excelling offers nothing more than being average? Please share your views…

Loving it Jk! I’ve heard many ways of saying ‘give a bit more’; 110%, go the extra mile, wow your customers, etc.
But this is a memorable one, easy to say and easy to remember. Which is how it should be!
I wish you the best end to 2010 and the best start to 2011, my friend, hope you have a happy and healthy New Year’s
Greetings Stuart! Everything is made more simple for me, when I can add my own twist to it! I’m glad you liked the read. Best wishes to you as well in 2011! It’ll be a big year for me – and I think that it will be for you as well. Peace.
I’m all in Jk.
An extra 10% in all areas of my life would take me to the next level, no question.
Thanks for the motivation,
Alex
Hi Alex – yes, it’s as simple as that. We always won’t more…and one way to obtain what we want is by giving more of ourselves! Thanks
Wow, JK.
Every time I drop by here I’m amazed at the depth of your posts. I can definitely see you’re putting the one-ten formula into the posts you write here – very well done!
Being a somewhat perfectionist, I also try to overachieve in everything that I do. Of course, sometimes this doesn’t necessarily help me – look at the goals I have yet to achieve for example. But I believe that by doing more, you’re setting yourself up to achieve more in the long run.
For example, let’s say you were working on an ebook to sell to your blog readers. If you strive to cover everything there is to cover about the topic of that ebook, consistently work to provide value while you’re writing, and then wrap the ebook up into an awesome design – by the time that ebook is ready to be launched, the customers who buy your product will be so amazed at the quality of it that they’ll be willing to buy other products from you if you ever create additional ebooks, online courses, and so on.
All in all – by insuring that ebook is valuable and going the extra mile, you increase the likelihood of more sales for future products and the likelihood of customers spreading the word about the current product – which then leads to more potential customers.
Thanks for the wealth of advice!
Christina
Hi Christina – yes, my posts are victims of the one-ten, for sure. [I say victim with a smile]. You know, though – I think I spend too much time on each post. But I’ve gotten much better in letting myself flow and not analyzing what others may not like- and focusing on what people can find as valuable information.
I loved the ebook example used. Perfect example of the benefits of high performance. An example I may have to actually use!
Thank you for the comment.
Hey Jk Hustle,
Thanks for sharing the amazing article!
I totally agree with you people should give more than what is expected of them. I believe in trying to smash my own expectations for that matter. Just because it feels good to know at when backed in a corner I come out on top. You are a great writer & as Christina above me mentioned that everytime I stop by you have a awesome front page article right smack in our faces!
Personally I don’t value when people say they only work 3 hours a day on their business. I believe in working hard. As far as I’m concered there’s never enough time for me to put in extra work! Haha.
Thanks again!
God bless,
William Veasley
Hey William Tha Great – Thanks for the great comment. I like how you put it: “smash my own expectations”. Great approach. Man, if I could only work 3 hours per day, I would. Why? well, it’s not cause I’m lazy, but there are plenty other things in life that I’d prefer doing – for instance, giving my time to a greater cause than “work” or spending time with my wife and kids. Imagine being so financially set, that you can simply spend 3 hours per day and generate a wealthy income. When I figure that out, I’ll be the first one practicing it. But for now – I’m going to work as smart as I can, to free up as much time as I can. Peace.
This reminds me of a quote I heard: “winners do the things that losers don’t want to do.” Sometimes I’ll even repeat this quote to myself while in the midst of putting in the work necessary to achieving one of my goals. It always reminds me to go that extra little bit.
A great article as usual.
Hi Lisa – I’ve also heard of that quote, but didn’t recall it until you mentioned it. Thanks for sharing. Essentially, that is what this post is about. If you want to win – then you have to perform as a winner. If you performer in any other fashion, you can only hope to win. Thanks for the valuable comment.
Hi JK,
Wonderful post my friend! Your articles comes in a time where I feel internally like giving 110%. I agree with you that the average person doesn’t have the ambitions to give 110! That is why the ones who go the extra mile achieve great success.
I love this sentence “Production beyond 100% is based on one’s internal drive to achieve greatness.” This is exactly right my friend, if the individual doesn’t have the internal drive to go the extra mile, then he/she will not do it. Thanks for sharing JK
Mr. Dia- I hope the holiday season is treating you well my friend. Let me add one thing to the sentence that you quoted from the post: “Production beyond 100% is based on one’s internal drive to achieve greatness.” I also think that anyone who truly (and honestly) brings their best reaches the same platform. Our intentions are extremely important and represent a major lining of how we’re perceived. It’s not always about hitting the mark – it’s impossible to be on 100% of the time, that’s perfection, which IS NOT achievable. But I think we have the ability to give all that we have, 100% of the time…that’s simply delivering in accordance to our ability. Thanks for the comment.
Jk,
Thank you for some simple and sound advice. I have heard of giving %110 but I think many people believe it is just a figure of speech. I agree with you that if you give just a little bit more than what is expected you create an unprecedented value that demands the attention of those who evaluate your performance. I will put these tips to use immediately.
This will help me start 2011 with a bang.
Hey Frank, yes simple indeed. I hope the tips aide in the big things you have planned for the new year. I think it’s great that all we have to do to increase our success is take ownership and increase our value. Best of luck to you and all of your planned endeavors! Thanks for being loyal – and loyal I am to you. Peace.
JK, I’d never heard it called the ‘one-ten’ rule, but I love it. (and it’s much easier than saying give 110% every time).
And if there is anyone I know that seems to exemplify this ‘rule’ in all they do it’s you. I really mean that.
You mentioned here that most people don’t want to live the one-ten. You’re right. Like the phrase goes, “There’s plenty of room for everyone on top.”
I’ve seen this statement prove itself true over and over and over again.
And the other thing, like you said, you simply can’t force-feed the one-ten on others. We can try to motivate and inspire, but we must often times accept the reality that some people just don’t want to offer that much of themselves. Such is the way it is.
Great stuff though man. I love the way you think JK. Have a great one buddy.
Marcus – yeah the one-ten iteration of 100% is one of those “hustle” terms. But I know you, of all people get it the concept well. Your actually great living example of it. I don’t why, but I love giving names to things…I feel like it makes it mine – gives me more ownership and personal relationship to it. With it, I tend to take it more seriously.
Thanks for the great comment and making mention that I practice what I preach. I surely try to! Also, quick thanks to you for all the motivation in the short time we’ve been friends – I appreciate it and have your back as well. Peace.
JK – awesome message man!
Perfect timing on the article. I’ve definitely been giving my business ONE-TEN this year Just today I was conducting an assessment of my yearly performance. I definitely founds some gaps that I will be working to fill this coming year.
I’ve given it my all this year and if I didn’t have such drive and focus on my goals I would definitely feel like it would be OK to, perhaps, take it easy for some time.
Fortunately, that is not the case and I know exactly where I am going and have mapped out how I want to get there. That doesn’t mean I won’t take detours on the way. But for now I have a map and I’m giving it ONE-TEN and even more next year.
Hector – Oh I know that your a one-ten kind of guy. I wish you the best with your business ventures in 2011. Even if we give our all now, we can still give even more later. Constant progress in delivering value = constantly progress in getting those rewards! happy new years!
Knocked it out of the park, JK! I love this. Always demand more of yourself and be ready to give far more service than you’re paid to give. That’s key to brand-building, and it’s key to relationships! Have a great New Year!
Bryan – thanks for stopping by and I’m looking forward to the new site on Jan 3! Thanks for the great comment and I hope you have a Happy New Year as well!
JK: Great post and great approach. I think it makes perfect sense and if you focus on setting your bar higher and then working to reach that bar, you will always set yourself up to achieve so much. I think this 110 rule is a great one. Great concepts. Thanks for passing it along.
Hi Sibyl – I’m glad that you find the concept useful. You already use it…but it’s just a new way to keep reminded. We should always reach beyond what others expect, as long as we want more than what comes with being average. happy new years!
The ability to do more than is expected is a winning differentiation between top achievers and under performers. Why it absolutely makes sense in theory, a lot of people as you rightly pointed out find it difficult to embrace. This is so because it is easier to stay on the sideline by being average than to take on the mantle of leadership because you chose to raise the bar.
I like the way you have phrased it, capability is not sufficient, desire must follow to live life at the 110% level. For me, I would consistently raise the bar in whatever I have decided to do because it somehow has a way of making the competition seem irrelevant!
Consider writing the One-ten in figures [110] in the article title for easy comprehension at first glance. or use both words and figure like this One-ten [110]
Great work JK. Thanks for giving this key principle of greatness a title.
Hey Tito – thanks for the advice. I’ll be visiting one-ten again in the future…at that point, I’ll utilize your suggestion. You nailed it in saying that “The ability to do more than is expected is a winning differentiation between top achievers and under performers.” I love the way you put it. Thanks for the comment Tito – Happy New Year!
Hi JK
Came over from The Sales Lion’s site via your comment.
That CommentLuv thingy appears to work then.
One – Ten, a great philosophy in anything you do, business, blogging, sport.
Be prepared to put yourself out for a client, finish that post even though it is Christmas, do another set of bench presses in the gym even though you don’t feel like it.
Notice that some bloggers blogged straight through Christmas and the New Year – now that is more than an extra ten percent. LOL
Hi Mr. Davis – The first thing I noticed is your website’s name ‘easypublicspeaking’, an area we can all use help in. I’ll be checking out your site very soon. exited to do so! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I agree, there’s a lot of generous display of dedication in giving one-ten in the blogisphere. – it’s great!
Happy New Year to you!
I do believe in the principle you have eloquently elaborated here. A characteristics of success requires that we give more of what we have than to settle to what we think is enough. But as what you’ve said, it’s no easy. However, we do have the choice to elevate or settle in mediocrity.
The Philosophy of the ONE-TEN Formula super charges the mind to get what you want. and aim higher but its the secret of strength and true Power – and Thanks for the question you asked me Jk you really got me Thinking deeply.
Lloyd recently posted..Synergism – How to Pimp Your Brain
Hey Lloyd – thanks for the great comment. If you want more…go get more. The method to that is give more! That’s ONE-TEN. Peace.
