This GUEST POST is brought to you by the young and ambitious William Veasley of GettingToThaPaper.com. William offers an interesting perspective on ‘self-dependence’ in this feature. The angle of this post leans towards entrepreneurship, but the over arching tone gives a unique view into the mind of a young man obsessed with becoming successful.
The subject of today is learning to be alone. You ask why this is important to entrepreneurship…
Very simple, no one’s going to do anything for you except well… YOU!
The so called associates and/or employees you have around now might not always be there, but you will. What are you going to do then?
Learn to be alone.
When you learn to be alone and do things for yourself you will be in a superior position. There won’t be any worry about relying on another person to handle business. Continue on to learn 3 splendid benefits that come after you learn to be alone.
Make Decisions for Yourself
There is nothing better than being able to make your own decisions. See, you don’t need someone or something in the way of your true abilities. When you are on your journey to success, you don’t need anything holding you back. In order to maximize your potential you have to be able to do what you want.
Even better, you can make decisions whenever you desire.
It’s your life, and you should be the one in control of your success. Start focusing on yourself instead of dividing your focus only weakening its impact. Get your mind right and get on track. If you’re not on track you need to start making moves in that direction.
I’m 18 years old and I have been homeless. I can personally tell you that there are times when you have to do ‘anything’ to get bread. It sucks not having a penny to your name, but when you make clever decisions for yourself you can climb out of ugly situations. I have visions to travel the world, write about what inspires me, and meet diverse people. I also believe there is much knowledge out there I can acquire from another person.
By traveling the world I will have opportunities to pick up many different cultures & languages. The only way I will be able to travel the way I want is to avoid getting sidetracked. Learn to be alone and it will get you one step closer to your aspirations.
Self-Supporting
When you learn to be alone you will figure out how to support yourself. Everyone needs to be able to control the direction their life goes without the assistance of outside forces. I can personally tell you it feels wonderful never having to go to another person for help. This is the way it should be, because it’s the back bone behind entrepreneurship.
Taking control of situations; doing what you want, when you want, and how you want.
You know the direction you’re headed better than anyone, so never let another person get in the way of your success. Focus on improving your position by making the moves it is going to take for you to get there.
Being a hustler means you work exceedingly hard at what you have a passion for and not accepting no for an answer. Learn to be alone so you can have your personal space to figure out what works best for you. Then get out there and hustle hard to live the life you desire.
If you wanted to buy a jet, no one could tell you otherwise.
An awesome self-supporting role model in my life is my father, because he has never had to rely on another person. If there is bad weather my father will make it through with his own 2 hands and 2 feet.
I believe in order to support yourself you need to acquire the value of being alone. There are countless hours I spend reading and writing when everyone else is fast asleep. The reason for this is I’m teaching myself to stay productive when no one’s around to push me. If you can be productive with no one around you’re on the way to progression, and that is vital to entrepreneurship.
Happiness from Within
Learn to be alone by starting with finding happiness within yourself. When you truly find happiness you won’t need another person to make you blissful (I’m not saying being a loner, just simply know how to live like one in case the time ever comes). Every single morning I wake up enthusiastic to do what I love and don’t need anyone to get me motivated.
My inspiration is always there, because I’m teaching myself how to be alone. Every second my motivation only gets stronger as I continue to develop. Consistent repetition will put you on the path to progression.
I can promise you there is no better feeling than learning how to be alone. My productivity is maximized because I’m running off of mostly inner motivation. Accept this nugget of game to improve your mindset, “work on building your inner motivation, because it’s 10 times stronger than your external motivation”.
Conclusion
If you really hope to have the best chance at tapping into your true potential, you have to learn to be alone. When you don’t need anyone to survive it will make you stronger mentally and physically. It’s great having friends around, but they might not always be there for you. This is when you have to be able to rely on your own 2 hands and 2 feet to survive.
The most successful people are people who know how to improve their position without needing another person’s push. Example: stop having someone else be your alarm clock. Make the decision to buy an alarm clock for yourself. Therefore you won’t be relying on another person to wake you up.
I truly believe that this advice will put you one step closer to a more successful life. Everyday I wake up and focus on what’s important to me. It might not be important to you, but I can concentrate on whatever I enjoy. Day by day I’m learning more how to be alone and focus on my own dreams and aspirations. If you don’t already, you should give it a try too!

DISCUSSION: I’m curious of your thoughts…I’ve always been under the impression that when I’m in the midst of the right company, multiple brains trumps one. Do you find that a more solitary approach trumps a team effort? I do find that having personal time is of ultra importance…do you carve out personal time? If so, how do you use it?

So many guest posts I’m seeing these days! It must be a theme
Seriously, great read William, I liked the angle of this post. I wrote a guest post about embracing loneliness, and I agree with a number of points you were making here. Great stuff.
In response to your discussion Jk, I think that both approaches are needed for separate points. We need alone time to plan our visions out, but we also need the minds of others to develop our plans and make them better. It’s a fine balancing act.
Kudos to you both for an amazing collaboration

Hey Stuart,
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I’m very happy you like the article my man. I get a natural high when I get comments like these that actually have depth and mean something rather than just a link back to your site.
I believe it is important for an entrepreneur to know how to handle things on his own, because at anytime you could find yourself all alone is the world we live in. Believe me when I say it can come by surprise and it will kill your motivation to make something of your life if you don’t know what it takes to be alone.
I agree with the point you made. A person that knows how to handle business on their own will be a force to be wrecking with if there is a team by their side. Then if everything happens to fall, hey you will know how to make moves and survive on your own.
Thanks again!

Hey Stuart – I agree…the inclusion of lone time is key. As of recent, I’ve learned “quickly” that the power of a group that shares a goal is absolutely incredible. So, as you shared, I think a balance approach works best…for me! peace.
What a terrific post! I love the message behind it – self-reliance, depedability, independence. It is a very valuable quality for a person to be self-motiviated – to go in and get the job done without having anyone tell you how or why. You figure it out on your own. Employers love this quality in people and it is hard to find. It is a highly respectable quality in a person! Thanks for this article. I feel pumped up just reading it!

Hey Dandy,

I happen to be a big fan of your work. To have you enjoy my article is something at really inspires my heart. I look forward to hearing from you again! So hopefully you won’t let yea boy down. (-;
A person that is self- motivated is a person on a mission. A person that has the power to control their destiny and won’t leave it up to lucky or the help of another. I’m the type of person that would rather use the natural instincts God bless me with before going to another person for help. I never want to go the illegal route, but you better believe if in that position I’ll do whatever it takes to eat.
I completely agree that it is something extremely hard to find in people. Whenever I fully teach myself the meaning of self-dependence then I will start looking for others with the same mindset and determination.
I’m really happy I pumped you up! You pumped me up by reading your wonderful comment.
Thanks again!

I definitely get where you are coming from. It’s definitely vital to be self-motivated and to tack action towards your success out of your own will-power.
To answer JKs question, I agree with Stu It’s a balancing act. Of course, I carve out time within the day or even sometimes the week to have alone time to myself away from any possible distractions. Usually I’ll (tell my wife where I’ll be
) go to a barnes and noble with a pen and my handy notepad and sit there for 30 minutes to an hour and meditate on ideas and visualize where I want my blog and my business to go. I’ll write down all the ideas I get and when I have a moment I share them with my 2 closest business mentors.
This helps me get alone time and allows me to meditate over the vision of my business (self-reliance) and at the same time share I can ideas with other to entrepreneurs to get their feedback and insights for continued growth and improvement (mastermind with other professionals)
Hey Hector,
You know I always enjoy your input!
I’m estatic you know exactly where I’m coming from. This is something I had to learn for myself when even my family turn their backs to me. The only person I had to rely on was myself. Thank the lord I made it out of that situation, but it was defintally a situation I would change for the world.
When your backs up against the wall that’s when you really show yourself what your made of inside.
Me and you both agree with Stuart. He made a very respectable point. I think it all starts with being alone. You should jump into a partnership if you don’t if even know what it takes to handle things on your own. If things go south you will be in a very bad position.
Everyone needs their alone time. Personally I’m the type of person that can produce surrounded by people, but when alone I’m on a completely different level. The focus I have is much higher and everyday I’m alone with my work it gets that much stronger. I couldn’t think of another place better than Barnes & Noble! I’m shocked you haven’t seen me strolling through there lol.
Thanks again!

Hector – I think that balance is always the right direction. I value the time I have alone – and have learned a lot from it. However, multiple minds working in the right direction have benefited me the most. I do find that being an excellent team player requires one to be self-reliant first. Thanks for the comment.
I love this post William. I believe that the ability to be self-sufficient, happy and peaceful in your own company is a wonderful gifts to have been granted as a human. I know we humans are hotwired to be social creatures but personally I feel strange and disoriented if I am in a position (for example being a guest in somebody’s house) where I can’t find some time to be alone and get back in touch with my thoughts. Having said that, and to address JK’s questions as well, I agree that once I’ve had that chance to get my thoughts straight it can sometimes be really beneficial to bounce ideas around with trusted friends…with emphasis on the trusted! William you sound like a strong and self-motivated survivor (ingredients for being a winner I think!) and someone who has found the right track for yourself. (You’ve certainly found great company to keep online judging by your choice of place to guest post!) I wish you the best of luck, and will be watching out for you on the blogosphere!
Hey Rosemary,
Thanks for the kind words!
I knew that a hustling environment was the perfect environment for me. I have only written one article for hustlersnotebook & it already feels like home! In all the guest post I have written I must say this is my favorite community to write for, because I thrive in an atmosphere such as this.
Let me tell you that you are not alone in the sense that you feel strange in another persons house, because it is not your space. It’s someone elses and it feels like you can never truly be alone and at peace. I feel a similar feeling having to ask another person for help. I will if I truly can’t help myself, but before I go to another person you better believe ima give it my all to help myself. I pride myself in learning how to handle tough situations on my own.
You make a very good point Rosemary, if you indeed find friends you must make sure they are friends you can truely trust. It seems like my life is full of experiences I learned from now that I look back on it. Picking the right friends was another situation that I have to learn from experience. It’s hard to know you can trust somebody, but when you do never let them go. You won’t find many people in your life you can say you truely trust.
I also, look forawrd to hearing from you again very soon!
Thanks again!

Great post William. Very true. No one is going to be looking out for you like you can look out for yourself. This is why no one can make success happen for you. You have to decide how bad you want it and figure out the steps it’s going to take you to get there! Great job!

The only way you will get anywhere in this life we live is to make moves in that direction. You have to make moves for yourself and keep moving. It’s only up to you to make a way for yourself. No one will be to blame except for… Well… YOU, if you aren’t in the position you were hoping for.
When you figure out what you want the most let nothing or anyone stop you. Be determined to find a way no matter e circumstance and in the dark you will find light.

Welcome to ‘The Notebook’ William, so glad JK invited you in for a round. You were homeless eh? Wow man, I’d like to know more about that and I’m sure this post was a reflection of such an experience.
I agree and disagree with what has been said here. No doubt, there is a power and force that comes from the man or woman that embraces their individualism and the idea that one must choose their own destiny. At the same time though, and on a more spiritual note, I think we must all recognize that we’re never alone. Divinity is always with us, just waiting to help. Every day I teach this to my children and I feel the concept of ‘You are not alone’ is critical to man’s ultimate happiness.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Thanks for the read William and continued success to you my new friend.

I’m happy Jk gave me free will to do my thing here. I couldn’t of asked for more from him than what he has done an put together.
Yes, I was homeless for about a month before I was able to get on my 2 feet. In that short month I had to learn how to survive on my own as a kid without a clue of where to begin. I only had myself, and there were many times I needed that extra bit of support. The support did show up when I wanted so I had to learn to be alone. You are exactly right, because this post was an exact refelection of what I learned. I will never be homeless again unless, God has it made that I be that way. The fact is that I am too determined to let myself slip up again. No more slips up not now not ever!
I like the way you think man. You are absolutely right we are truly never alone. God always has your back and he has always had mine even when I felt alone he was there helping me make my way.
When I wrote this article I was talking from more of a people to people theme. You can never be free of God’s will wether you want or not. I was aiming towards the people currently in your life.

William,
This was awesome and astounding in its truth! We are born alone and we’ll die alone. The only person we can ever count on 100 percent is ourselves. Once we learn to be alone and do for ourselves we won’t go looking for others to fulfill us in life, and when we enter relationships not being needy they tend to work out better.By relationships I mean all relationships not just romantic ones. We are free to allow the other person to be who they are because we’re so solid in our ability to do for ourselves.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

I think a girl that didn’t need me and could handle business all on her own would be an extremely attractive girl. Same goes vice-versa. That is why the most successful people you attract most of the opposite sexes. People are drawn to a person that is self dependent.
Another great benefit of learning to be alone is showing yourself you have what it takes to help yourself. Before you can help another person you have to be able to at least better your own positioning.

It’s going to be a lot easier whenever I start having people write for my blog, then I can focus more of my writing for ther blogs which is what I want to do. I love writing for blogs like this and yours!
I just believe everyone should be independent and able to take care of themselves if the time ever presents itself, because it can come by surprise trust me.
Not to long ago I was just getting out of jail, and I didn’t have anywhere to go. My family turned there backs to me and I was left homeless for about a month. It took me a good month to get back on my feet. That was the most embarrassing and hardest time in my life. I was at an all time low the only point in my life that was lower than that was when I was behind bars.
Thanks to God grace I was able to get a job and get back on my feet. I learned a lot from that period in my life, like how to survive without much money, and the real meaning of doing whatever it takes to eat.

William Tha Great – Thanks for the excellent Guest Post. I’m honored to have featured your article; showcasing the thoughts of a young aspiring success story.
For years I to believed that being alone was the best route for me, business wise. As I look back, I used that ideology as a defensive mechanism to keep myself from being let down by others, and protected from bad dealings. What this did really did for me was keep me from experiencing larger opportunities. Now, I’m speaking from my own experience – which surely isn’t gold – but I wanted to share that with you.
I think we must harbor the ability to be self-reliant, but there’s a power out there that lurks behind a mastermind alliance.
I look forward to watching your growth – you’ve captured the eye and support of many.

I think your right, but i also think that we all need a support network around us if we really want things to kick off.
Having the power to make your own decisions whenever you want is great but if there are others involved (say employees)
Then really whatever decision is made has to balance out and take in the implications on those people as well.
Employees are a form of support network as my following is a support network to me

You want to always be in a position where you can make your own decision and not have someone else make them for you. When you are with a team you still make decisions, but as you said you have to have the well fare of the whole team at mind.

My alone time is the time where my vision seems to be the clearest and the sharpest. I use my peers to fine tune my skills and make sure I put my best foot foward but my alone time is priceless. The truth is self support is paramount if you want to be sucessful at anything because unfortunatly people can change like the weather.
Everyone loves you when you are on top but no one seems to want to help you when you fall on hard times. Thank God for grace because at times when I felt the most alone is when I drew closer to him and he directed my path. I am glad I was able to read and learn from your experience.

It’s difficult to fight our natural instincts of being managed and being led but you’re right; it’s a key element in entrepreneurship. Being disciplined enough to manage your time effectively goes against all our years of structured schooling, deadlines, and then 9-5 work days.

In the entrepreneur life you’re the leader of your own pack, a ‘one-man show one pack wolf’. You cannot trust anyone, so don’t spoil you plans, keywords, projects, etc. with anyone because there is a tough life, a war zone on the online world. In order to get on the top, you need to start from down and work as hard as possible, it is essential. One good tip and thing good to be kept in mind is that we all need to stay motivated, me, you, everybody. In order to do our jobs good and constantly, we need a motivation for doing it, any type of motivation. Thanks for sharing!
