Step Your Game Up: Take Ownership to Elevate Your Results

by Jk Allen

Post image for Step Your Game Up: Take Ownership to Elevate Your Results

I often hear people speak about things never working out in their favor. I hear it all the time. In fact there are large groups that take very little accountability in for the results they achieve (or failed to achieve). It seems to be common place for our expectations to rise without elevating our game. That’s down right crazy and a terrible formula for success!

I’m not trying to burst anyone’s bubble, but if that’s what it takes – then this article serves as my pointy needle – poking away at the misconceptions keeping us from reaching our maximum potential. I don’t write this as an expert; preaching and professing that I know it all. Actually, I’m in front of the class on this one (a student). I often need to reset and remind myself to stay on track and to keep focused.

You Get what You Give…Period

You’ve heard it before: “you reap what you sow”. So simple, yet so profound. If you’re unfamiliar, let me explain…

Every action has a definite consequence; good, bad or indifferent – depending on the action.

Example: If I plant an apple seed, I should expect an apple to grow. It would be foolish of me to expect a corn harvest. It’s that simple.

If you want certain results (reap/get), but you aren’t acting in a fashion to obtain those results (sow/give), then you’re off-balance in your expectations and hopes.

TIP: Be deliberate in your actions. Don’t just go with the flow, be definite in your direction. Average Joe’s get average results! It’s okay to be average if that’s what you want. But if you’re after more, you have to give more.

You’re Your Own Luck Factory

Sitting back, hoping and waiting for a lucky break isn’t the best strategy, I promise. The only break that may happen is your own heart after wasting days/months/years hoping for luck that never surfaces. Remember “You Get What you Give“…so if you want luck, you better do something to get it.

TIP: Want to be really really really lucky…I have the key!!! Work really really really hard. Guaranteed Success! I’ll offer an unlimited return policy on this one (like Nordstrom!)

Take Feedback Seriously, or Lightly Depending on the Feedback

How many times has someone taken the time to share advice that you completely disregarded? Maybe they said something that you didn’t like…or more so – your ego didn’t like! Take feedback from those who you respect seriously…even if you don’t like it. What one person sees in you can be what everyone sees, except you. We need honest eyes to share how we may be perceived in the world. Relying on the eyes in the mirror can be a little biased – even with 20/20 vision.

TIP: Pay close attention to feedback that you receive that hurts your feelings. It’s likely your ego that’s being hurt, which needs a nice bruising anyway. Never allow one’s feedback of you crush your spirit. Some speak in the name of “good”, but have ill intentions. Being vulnerable opens us up to that – but you have more to gain than lose.

Don’t forget the “H” Word…and I Don’t Mean Hustle

It’s inevitable to happen; you get a few wins under your belt, everything falls in place seemingly perfect, and up goes the arrogance and out goes the humbleness.

TIP: Be grounded and humble. If you allow your fortune to go to your head, it just might fall to your feet. How can you stay grounded? Well start off by helping others that have an interest in going the same direction as you.

So What, Be a Failure

Go ahead and take some calculated risks and pay no thought to the idea of failing. And since you’re on a role, go ahead and learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others. Now that you’ve got some momentum, fine tune your approach and come out as “successful” in the long run, I dare you. You can’t learn success from your own successes…you have to stumble (fail) and learn from all aspects of the cycle. You have to two-step before leaning to tap dance (that’s an original!)

TIP: Don’t limit your abilities by taking it easy on yourself. Go hard and give it 110% –  do something grand! If you fail, it’s not permanent as long as you take away the significant learnings from the experience. This mentality makes it possible to always win – even in defeat.

You Own Your Results

This was the easiest article I’ve written to date. As my fingers glided around the keyboard and the glare from the light bounced off of my screen – I saw a very familiar face who needed this needle-poke for motivation [me]. All too often do we get caught up in our day-to-day tasks and forget to assess and celebrate our wins, or be honest about where you are in our journey to success. I hope this served you as it served me; a realization that we own our results through our actions…it’s simple: take ownership to elevate your results.

DISCUSSION: What are your thoughts on owning your results, being your own luck factory and keeping yourself accountable? Please share any tips you have to help others step their game up. Thank you!

Well said JK
We are responsible for our results. The measure of success that we get is determined by the hard work that we put into the work. We cannot expect luck and success to come on its own.
At this juncture, I would like to add an other point that to a certain extent, even others determine our sucess. It can be in two ways.
Firstly, the belief and faith in someone gives results greater than the hard work that we have put in
And secondly, the most important are the ones who are into mischief all the time. We need to keep a check on them. Though there is little we can do in such circumstances, we need to try our level best to conatin them within their boundaries.

Ranjith,

You made a great point. But I don’t believe that others determine our success. Sure, others can help or hender…but they don’t determine it. I see anyone who has ill intentions for me as an obstacle – just like I would view having the lack of financing in setting up something big.

Now, I’m not down playing the important it is to keep this fact in mind (mischief), but at the end of the day, I think those people are a natural part of the process.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom Ranjith!

JK, you bring it man! Awesome read, I can just imagine you hunched over at the computer typing this baby out, constanting muttering “Step up” to yourself ;-)

It’s very true that a lot of people we know, don’t step it up. They all have dreams, but only a few ever decide to do anything about them. And out of those people, only a few keep persisting through the obstacles to reach their goals.

Like you said, “So what? Be a failure.” It’s so true, why are so many people afraid of failing? Failure isn’t going to bring you to poverty and despair, failure gives off the illusion of that but the reality is, failure prepares you for your next level. If you don’t fail, you won’t change, and if you won’t change, you won’t get step it up.

Inspiring stuff JK, I’m pumped! Take it easy bud :-)

Hey Stu,

I think when it comes down to it, people are so much afraid to fail…I think it comes down to be people being lazy and afraid fo the discomfort involved with succeeding at all costs. They want what they want, but they aren’t willing to put in the hard work to acquire it.

Thank you for the comment my friend!

Great article JK.
Have you read Stephen Coveys 7 habits of highly effective people?

He breaks down the word responsible to Response-able.

You are responsible for everything that happens to you and response-able to choose how you are going to react and what you are going to do with the situation you are in.

If you chose not to adapt and change, that is your choice and you can continue to explain, but learning that you have a choice, that you are Response-able means you can make a change.

Daniel – how are you sir!
Yes, I have read 7 habits – but it’s been years. I was going to bring it out last week and re-read it, but I have so many books in the pipeline that I opted for a newer book.

I actually do recall “reponse-able” now that you mention it. That Covey is brilliant isn’t he.

Thank you for including that here. Perfect fit for this discussion.

Hey JK

Here are a couple of quotes that illuminate some of your points. Jon Bon Jovi was being interviewed and the interviewer said something along the lines of how luck the band had been.

JBJ half smiled half glared and said something like: Yeah, we’ve been lucky. But it’s funny that the harder we work, the luckier we get. (Ouch – score one to JBJ).

From a great book – Tell to Win by Peter Guber : “Failure is merely a cul-de-sac on the road to success.” If you’re scared to try new stuff, you’ll be forever working form your comfort zone. By definition, that’s a plateau, or a place of stagnation. You need to try stuff you CAN’T do to grow and get better. That’s true for EVERYTHING – sports, blogging, life, music, whatever.

You also touch on a theme I resonate with – and that’s responsibility. I believe that a lot of the ills that pervade our societies are down to the abrogation of personal responsibility on an individual level. So often you hear someone complain: Life’s not fair. Or: That’s so unfair.

Newsflash: The Universe is vast. You are less than a speck in its eye. It doesn’t care about YOU. Get over yourself and start taking responsibility for your actions. As a parent you’ll understand that – if you don’t take responsibility and get out there and hustle then you don’t earn an income, you can’t feed the kids, you can’t put a roof over their heads.

Once you take full responsibility for your actions you grow as a person. That growth is reflected in everything you do. And you’re far more likely to gain success if you invest yourself in everything you do (whatever metric you use to measure success).

Great and important post. Write on.

Hey Paul

Great quotes. I like the both – but think it’s cool that Bon Jovi said: “Yeah, we’ve been lucky. But it’s funny that the harder we work, the luckier we”. I love it!

I think all too many people think they are owed stuff and not willing to be RESPONSIBLE and go and get it themselves. So, they sit back anger, depressed, and frustrated with life; teach their kids to be the same way, and as a result, we have a cycle of weaklings breeding weaklings. [that was harsh, but tha's how I feel about it]. But I take on the responsibility to do my part to help change that cycle.

You ALWAYS bring it in the comments. And I’m thankful that you always bring your insight here.

Love this JK. Seriously poetic stuff here. You get what you give is tried and true advice that people seem to take a bit too lightly. Yesterday I was surfing and I had a wave that was a bit bigger than I was comfortable come through an decided to go for it. But I knew that I made a fairly half assed attempt at paddling because I was scared and as a result ended up not catching the wave. You make a great point about feedback. I had a listener to the podcast give me some solid feedback which annoyed me, but was completely spot on. 2 months later he sent me an email saying thank you for incorporating his suggestions. As far as creating your own luck, when I watch people waiting for circumstances to change, I keep thinking, the circumstances won’t change until your actions do.

Reply

Jk Allen April 21, 2011 at 6:17 am

Hey Srini – Good for you going after that wave. you were a bit reluctant, but you had the right mentality, to TRY to give it a shot. We can’t be home run hitters each time at bat…we’ll strike out a bunch of times. But keeping out eyes beyond the fence beyond the fence will at least put us in the best position possible to make it happen.

Yes, feedback is important. I get it a lot. And I take it as professional advise. Even if at the end I don’t implement it – I at least strongly consider it and weigh it out.

Waiting for circumstances…that’s nonsense isn’t it?
Create circumstances…now that makes sense!

Great comment man – thank you!

PS – looking forward to doing the interview.

“Taking Ownership” for me requires me to fail and fail again on a very regular basis every day. That’s the only way to success. I like rejection as much as the next guy…it tastes bad, really. But I have come to appreciate the word “no” for what it is. The necessary step to that elusive “yes”.

The world is full of individuals who won’t “own it”. I’m happy to have articles like this to inspire me to not slip into that mode. Thanks JK!!

Man this was simple and sweet. The bottom line is if you want something you have to work for it. It will not be handed to you, unless you have wealthy parents. To me I own my results and I own my failures. When something doesn’t go the way I expected I put the blame on myself. Then I refocus, adapt and change after I call you for some advice. Taking ownership is the first step towards pushing yourself to that next level. I want to shot for %120 so I can catch up to your output.

Recently I have been slack in my production only giving 80-90%. I guess its time to own up and push myself to maximize my performance.

This was another knockout man! You make me sick! lol! Can you teach me how to write?

Yes very simple…for some of us!
Very out of this world – to many. I want to bridge that gap. I want the simple/basic/fundamental formulas of success to be a simple vision to those who currently can’t see it. They think it’s all about luck that comes out of nowhere….and that gets them nowhere.

I tell you, even while you may not be maximizing your production, only producing at 80-90% capacity, you double most folks. Belive that…and you make it look easy because you’re the guy that has the spark floating in his hands – playa!

Can I teach YOU how to write. That’s like me telling a Dr. to move over and let me handle the operation. I’d tear somebody up. You have the skills – I’m just a student.

Great work as always. Thanks for reminding me about the humble, I’m too cocky a lot of time and I need to be reminded that my poop stinks just as bad as everyone else’s

I would add one for you: Make decisions. Decisions are the control levers of your life. It is easy to “let” things happen as they will, or happen to you. That’s fine if you decided to sit back and see, but most people don’t make any important decisions. Sure, they decide which car to buy, but do they decide how their own futures will turn out? Do they decide each day if they should go to work or not; if that’s the best thing they should do that day? It might turn out the same, but you can’t claim credit unless you made a decision to have it happen that way.

Nice addition on “Making Decisions”. Thank you for adding that. A decision has to be made before doing anything…so that’s the launching pad, making the decision!

Bravo!

I can’t remember who said it first…but fear of failure is fear of success. And Mark Cuban had a good one too: every no gets me closer to a yes.

I do find a lot of people complaining about how lucky others are. And how “if I had this, or if I had that” blah blah blah.

Rich people are rich because they worked for it (usually :) ). Successful people are successful because they hustled. No one ever sees the work that goes into it.

I have coworkers who complain and moan about how people are too rich. I hate hearing that. It is just pure jealousy oozing out of their every pore. Those “rich assholes” are there because they put themselves out there and took risks. But when I call them out on their jealousy they say “no, I’m not jealous, it’s just not fair.”

Which is another thing that really bothers me. It is only fair that the person that works hardest reaps the greatest rewards. I look at these people that complain and there is no reason for it. The only thing limiting them is themselves, their laziness, and their jealousy.

These are the same people that buy lottery tickets every week in hopes of being able to quit their jobs someday. Great retirement plan!

It is an environment I didn’t want to be in anymore. So I recently quit :)

And that concludes yet another rant sparked by Mr Jk Allen. :)

Man, I loved your article “Walking the Talk- I Quit My Job”..that was great and one of my favs!

Yeah, fear of success is a trip. I think it has a lot to do with people not being willing to change. They fear having to be challenged and stretch themselves beyond their comforts. That can be daunting…but it’s the only way!

People see the end result and figured that others got success or wealth from luck…they can’t see the hard work they put in. They can’t see the sweat, only the candy.

Thank you for the great comment man and being a part of the community. I love what you’re up to at your site and will be around that way OFTEN.

Jk,
I could tell this article flowed for you man. From my end, it was like drinking a cool glass of inspiration….great stuff!

You had me right off the bat with “reap what you sow”. I love discussing the law of the harvest, because it’s so applicable to every aspect of our lives. There simply are no shortcuts in life.

Along those lines, I listened to about an hour and a half of Gary Vaynerchuk in the car the other day, and he stated that this blogging/online revolution that we’re all a part of is a modern day gold rush. What’s my point? During the goldrush it was said that all one had to do was move west, walk down a stream, and boom….unlimited wealth. Turns out that wasn’t the case at all. Many folks moved west and lost everything,

Many people today are led to believe blogging/making it online works the same way. Sign up with Wordpress, start a Twitter account, and boom…..the checks start rolling in. Well, many now are also finding out that there’s no substitute for hard work. As you said, “you get what you give”.

I love the “H” word Jk. In fact it’s one of my favorites! Humility’s a funny thing. The second you’re convinced you have it is the moment is slips away.

One more thing….”luck factory”, that’s a grand slam dude! I could go on about this, but I’m convinced that luck is indeed manufactured. It’s inevitable that if you do enough good for enough people while working as hard as possible, the “breaks” will come your way. Not as a coincidence, but through attraction.

Great Post Brother….just great!

Hey Jason,
Reaping and sowing is such an easy concept to understand and apply. Anyone can think about how this has affected their life and realize that it’s real – every cause has an effect.

Gary Vee made a great point about blogging being resemblant of the gold rush. That’s spot on!

There is no substitute to hard work. And I say that even those who claim luck – I think they attracted it for in some deliberate way. Every effect started with a cause.

You know, I don’t even really believe in the word luck, even though I use it. Luck to me means some magical thing that happens out of the blue. I think we get what we get for a very specific reason – we work for it. We don’t really get lucky…we actually just get results.

The passion outrightly came through in this one JK!

Nothing moves until we move, nothing happens until we make them happen. Results are outcomes of our efforts. You want it, you have got to go for it. On and on these are all important reminders on our journey to the top.

The irony however is this; most people settle for average even though they know they can do more and be more. The comfort of today outweighs their drive for a better tomorrow. So they just settle down and become complacent.

It all boils down to choice, we are free to be whatever we choose and that’s where the greatest problem lies. In how we exercise that choice. For some, they choose mediocrity and for others they choose greatness. Our actions ultimately respond to our choices and those choices become our eventual reality.

One motivation for me in stepping up my game is the fact that I always remind myself that I won’t be here forever and that makes every work, project, action and effort i expend to be nothing but the best since I may not have the privilege of a second chance to make a difference. So, I focus on making the most out of every opportunity I have to make a difference. I know it is only a privilege and must not be wasted as I might never get another next time.

You will die, it could be now, so decide, what mark you want to leave behind.

That is what makes me step up my game, the thought that my work, might just be the last, so I focus on making it the best possible.

The result?

People recognize the effort and that is a great differentiator.

Hard work is key but not sufficient. It’s totally possible to be a great performer and not get acknowledged for that by your employer. If that’s the case you need to work for yourself or at a minimum move on. My husband was once fired for saving a company 5 weeks of wages through automation.

There was so much here JK that I appreciated. Really man, it was great. What I love so much about you and your approach to life is the clear paradigm you come from, which is, Man is in charge of his/her own success and destiny…Now granted, there are other factors at work here (which you and I both are well aware of), but that’s not the focus of your great writings. You help other people to help themselves. I don’t know if I’ve ever asked you this, but have you ever listened to Jim Rohn before? The last time we skype’d, which was way to long ago – you told me about Jim Rohn and him being your favorite. I haven’t checked him out on Youtube.

I believe that there are so many factors that cause people to not take advantage of the unlimited options they have in life. So many feel like they weren’t put in this world to serve a purpose or to be outstanding. I beg to differ, not just for myself, but mostly for others. I see potential all over the place so I take on the responsibility to do whatever I can to make sure that people know the real deal.

I thought about you as I wrote the opening line to my conclusion. I knew you would appreciate the way this flowed. It’s happening more and more now. I’m loosening up…not so darn rigid. I still have a looong way to go – but the Lion has played a serious role in my own development. Thanks bro!

You ended your comment on a note that I think plays a mind game with people “sometimes it just takes a while”.

It sure does! I’ve learned this through physical fitness. I’ve learned a lot of discipline actually through fitness. I can have my best workout ever, and still look in the mirror and not look any different. I have to be consistent in having those “best” workouts and in time, the results will show.

So many people are currently playing 24 hour fitness for the remainder of the year and not using their services because they started the year off motivated and excited to get in shape. But after working out for 2 weeks, and not seeing results – they figure they’d increase their cheat days and in the long run they end up putting on more weight than they started with.
“sometimes it just takes a while”.

That was a rant – that’s also a teaser to a future post. I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate some of what I’ve been doing longer than anything except breathing, eating and playing videos…working out. ETA-TBD

By the way, remember when you first stopped by here? It was January 25th “The 30 Year Old Student” post. Well a couple of post later (“Framework for Getting Results”), you made me aware that I should include some type of pictures or non-text-art because at the time that’s all I used…well, I’ve included pictures in every post since you gave me that advice. In fact, each piece I’ve used I’ve taken and edited. I take feedback! Bit.ly’s still a different story. And so is my tag line!

Hey JK,
Some really good stuff there. I really hate feeling like a victim. So often when we come up short it’s our shortcoming and our unwillingness to pay the price and expend the effort. Blame replaces honest accountability and effort. Blame is so much easier; it’s too bad it doesn’t work. It doesn’t inspire, motivate, feel good nor help us down the path towards attainment. And healthy people avoid like the plague the negative influence of blamers. So thanks for a wonderful blog.,It’s feels good to be around people who believe in giving their best effort to living life well.

And I agree, it feels good to be around people who give their best. And I say that one giving their best doesn’t mean that they have to be better than anyone else…it’s just about your personal best not being the best.

Thank you for the continued support Riley. It’s really nice having you around and bringing your wisdom. Thank you sir!

Hey JK, I like the post; the only magic formula is hard purposeful work w/ a goal in mind.

You create your own luck; every weekend I expect to win the lottery, but I guess you have to buy a ticket to make that happen, huh. There are no shortcuts.

Feedback, look at the source and acknowledge it accordingly. Know when to hold them, know when to fold them and act accordingly.

Yes, be very humble and thankful and make sure you also support everyone who helped you achieve your goals. Make it a win/win for everyone. No man is an island.

Finally, don’t be afraid to fail to succeed. Sometimes not easy when you are the sole provider for your family; but it sure makes you more committed to the decision, huh?

Good to see you out and about and it looks like you are gaining some traction; best of luck to you.

Glad you liked the post and thank you for including your take on each of the points. I always appreciate the value you bring to the table.

I completely understand when you speak on being the sole provider for your family. Because of that I’m a bit conservative – but I still get my hustle on! And because of it I’m very focussed.

I’m reminded of the story of the orphan eagle that was placed in a chicken coop by a kind farmer. A high soaring eagle flew by and noticed his brother (of a different mother) pecking with the chickens. He flew down and informed the orphan eagle of his real nature. The orphan eagle claimed ownership of his life (stepped into his authentic position as king of the sky) and flew high, high, high! Only a few get to the stratosphere (Mohammad, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Confucius …). The rest of us are here to soar higher and higher, and hopefully be a demonstration for others who are interested. That is what you are doing – Jk. NICE. blessings

Hello Rob,

You’re a magical story-teller. If I were to tell that same story – It would either be 2 sentences (and it would lack any moral message) or it would take me 10 paragraphs. Story telling is an art – my wife is good at it. Me, however – I leave out the details that I don’t think are pertinent, but in the process, I completely dilute the message. I felt like I was sitting 3rd person watching the eagles, chicken and farmer as I read that story. Reading “The Best Salesman in the World” set an incredibly high bar for story telling!

The thing I liked about the story you shared here Rob, is that it included the call from another (the brother eagle) and the orphan eagle took the feedback and he soared, just as he was meant to.

Very kind of you to say I’m a demonstration for others. Reading that made my day. I’m not trying to shine, just trying to express something within me that makes me care about others journey in life.

Thank you Rob
Blessings back to you!

Very well said JK! I think it was Albert Einstein who said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. I simply love that quote JK because in encompasses so much.In fact, I have a fake stone with that quote on my desk!

There’s so many people out there who hate their current financial situation but aren’t wiling to do anything about it. Instead they rely on the government to bail them out or simply keep wishing something changed in their lives.

Others play the lottery again and again and again, waiting for that free meal. Now dont get me wrong, very few people do get that free meal but the probability of winning is so low, it’s almost irrelevant. I call the lottery the financially uneducated man’s tax because if people really understood the odds of winning they wouldn’t throw their money away. (sorry for the rant)

Anyway, you know how I feel about taking daily actions that are consistent with my vision. You know, I’ve talked to so many people who want to start businesses and one of the most popular objections is that they dont have time for a business.

My initial reaction is everyone has 24 hours in a day. The reason most people dont have time is because they feel that when they come home after a long day at work they “DESERVE” to take a break, they DESERVE to watch some TV and they DESERVE to relax and have a good time.

I have this little strategy I tell people about that I call the 1% solution, the premise being that if you have a goal or vision you want to reach. If you just make as small as 1% progress towards that goal every day, in 100% you woud have reached that goal – it’s that simple. From their you go on to your next goal or next vision and so on and so on. You let the compounding effect take place

What separates those people who are action takers from those who are wishful thinkers is mindset – it’s all MINDSET.

Great comment Hector! Thank you for spending the time to share your take on this topic. It’s very very appreciated!

EVERYONE has 24 hours in their day. EVERYONE! Some have a little more involved inside of the 14 or so hours that their awake – but sacrifices have to be made. For this reason I have to make sure to use 19-20 of those hours for my grind, and the rest for sleep.

I love the 1% Strategy Hector – that’s a great way to position it. Baby steps is hard to understand when it comes to going after goals – putting numbers to it makes it more relative to something…each % is contributing to the larger chunk. I’m steeling that one from you! I will pay royalties!

There was this weight loss show on MTV not to long ago and they had a pretty good system for helping teens lose weight. They would set a number of days that their grand goal should be accomplished and then got to work – chipping away at it daily.
Thanks Hector

And those who like to complain about how the system, the government, the rich people, the business owners, churches, schools, etc. have kept them down are getting a payoff, too. They see themselves as victims, and victims are what they become. You’re right on, my friend. Take care!

Thanks man, I appreciate being called nice (especially over being called a jerk!). I do keep it real. But let me be honest – I’m pretty soft. I don’t like to hurt people’s feelings, and I’d rather deliver an easy message (for the messagee) than a hard one. But with age Bryan – I’m realize more and more that our days are numbered. We have to make an impact now – not just tomorrow and next week. So with that in mind – I’m becoming a little more direct and telling it like it is! I mean to offend no one, and only to help everyone!

You’re right – we always find a way to make it happen. I remember in college when PS2 came out. I HAD to have it. I was broke as a joke – but trust me, I figured out a way to get it, and Madden! I was driven by wanting something so I put in extra extra hours at work, and stood outside at Best Buy ALL NIGHT like a nerd (I did that when Xboox 360 came out too)!

There’s no benefit what so ever in being a victim. None..or else I’d be trying to figure out how to turn into one myself! lol!

Thank you for the support and time to read and comment Bryan – much appreciated sir!

I remember a coach of mine saying once that to be a top performing team we had to be both hungry and humble. Stuck with me ever since. There is always room for the hustle… the go-getter… the work-as-hard-as-you-possibly-can person. But once there is a measure of success, you have to remember to be humble about it. Or it’s not going to work out in the end.

Good post, Jk. Enjoyed your thoughts on this!

Having and nurturing positive intentions (and energy :) ~ while taking self-responsibility ~ sends a big message to the Universe: I deserve the best and am drawing unlimited abundance and magical possibilities to me.

And this aligns with following your passion, or bliss. When you embrace your true calling, and follow through in your chosen career or livelihood, it doesn’t feel like work. It’s joyful. You want to give it your all. And it’s often effortless. You’re in the flow. Time flies. All of which sets the stage for unleashing a stream of abundance. Win-win!

JK,
I join this conversation a bit late.

Funny I was just replying to a comment on my post which argued that we are not the masters of our destiny. The person believes everything is written down for us.

I have big issues with that type of logic. If we actually believe this, then we should just sit at home and wait for the day we die, right?

This comes down to your opening paragraph idea, taking responsibility for our actions. Everything will not happen if we don’t take responsibility for our actions, we will not plant and harvest, or feel humble or even experience failure.
What will we do? Blame someone else for the bad in our lives and the good also.

JK, you are miles ahead with this mindset. Thanks for showing us the path.

Hmmm, I take it that he person who left that comment on your site may be taking that view from a religion point of view. For me, and what I believe in, the Bible tells us that we have free will. That’s one heck of a debate right there…because that would mean that we are robots. That would mean that there’s no purpose in the world. If everything is laid out and scripted, then what’s the point.

I too have a BIG issue with that mentality.

Thank you for brining this here John. Really added some flavor to the conversation.

Love It Jk – Do you know what else I love, I love chilling out. like most people, Sun, food, drink, its nice to chill and Just be. But Like you said if you want more, if you want to chill at a higher level you have to step up your game.

Because life is dualistic the opposite of chilling is action, sometimes it hard to get the mind out of chill mode and into action mode.

Stepping up the game and action/hard needs to be synonymous chilling. In order to get good results, it comes down to how down time is used, Down time needs to be up time, Not just chill time or mong out time. chill out time needs to be passively active. (that’s what works for me anyway) Hard work and chilling became one juggling act.
Taking Ownership and Elevating Results and Activities is key in all this like you said.

Theirs a lot of value in here, I do like this “Relying on the eyes in the mirror” That’s great, people make good mirrors.

and this “So What, Be a Failure”, that reminds me of sometime Tony buzan tough me – the Human brain is made to fail learn, grow then succeed – There can be No stepping up of the game without (growth) without learning or work.

I’m really feeling this post J its Soul/growth food

My man Lloyd – What’s up!

Good point – we have to take breathers and just relax. Regardless if we have a win or loss, if we’re working hard, we have to chill out. I need to do better at that one – big time.

I like how you framed up the Chill Out concept as being passively active. that means that even when we’re taking a break – we’re light-weight still working on progression.

Glad you felt this one Lloyd. That’s always the purpose to have not just write stuff down, but to create some form of value-impact.

Thank you for all that you represent around here…you’re the man!

Hey Jk,

I have failed more times that I would like to admit within the last 9 months, and only now am I viewing the word “failure” in a different light. For me failures have become much needed lessons learned, exposure, and most of all NEW BEGINNINGS.

I’m right there with you when you say if you want certain results, act in a fashion to obtain them. I get extremely irritated when I hear people complaining because something they claim they want hasn’t manifested itself to them. In my mind I’m like “you’re not doing what it takes to get those results”

2+2=4 simple as that AKA you reap what you sow. I can’t wait to share this, I know a few people who need to hear something like that and my words just aren’t enought lol

You have the right frame of mind: “…failures have become much needed lessons learned, exposure, and most of all NEW BEGINNINGS.”

Without failing enough, we don’t learn enough. Sounds cheesy, but it’s all very simple.

I like your simple analogy: “2+2=4″. You have to have 2 and 2. If you have 2 and 1, you can’t get to 4. Very easy way to understand the simplicity behind all of this.

Thank you for your value add. I hope you enjoy the special weekend. See you around next week!

I’ve always loved the following quote: “Life is about luck. The harder you WORK the more LUCK you have.”

…and how true that is for all of us! If we work hard then we’ll make our own luck. We’ll find success, greater productivity, and release that inner work monster that’s been living deep down inside of us.

The question has always run through my mind though: How do you balance work? How do you go about working harder? You don’t want to work so hard, that you soon find you’ve lost everything. Family. Friends. Relations. Life. There’s a great amount of self control there. What do you think?

Hey Christian,

Nice quote – and it fits perfectly here.

I don’t think the idea of luck really exists. I think we attract everything in to our lives. I think it’s deliberate and definite. I only use Luck because it’s a common word. But I see as a matter of attracting something special – but only based on our efforts.

Sometimes we don’t know what produced our “luck”, but I believe it was something, at some point in our life.

I’m one of the highest performers in my company (a large global company) in a high-profile position (where eyes aer on me) and I manage to rank at the top and work far less than everyone else. I only work 6-7 hours per day. My peers, no kidding, work 10-11. The difference is that I live within my priorities. Work is not high on my list. I do it very well, and I’m very focussed for the time I do work, so I can move on throughout my day and get to where my priorities are – my family. I’m a hustler!

Thanks for the comment Christian – have a good weekend!

It can take years of doing nothing amazing to finally realize that it’s you that’s holding yourself down; and people go through their whole lives never getting to this point. The people who change the world are the one’s who realize that it needs changing, and don’t just realize, but DO. So many people come up with all these great thoughts saying they will do this and that, but they don’t take ownership, and all they ever do is have those thoughts, nothing more.

Doing is important. Realizing has it’s weight – but without putting it into action, then what good is it. We have to become more action oriented as a world-society. Too many people are lazy and depend on the easy route. Hence, we have diminished education, terrible economies, weak leadership…and the cycle continues to repeat because we teach this same “weakness” to our children.

Hi Jk, this is another banner post Jk.

I live my life based on getting back from life what you put in… the quality of life we are experiencing is directly effected by what we are investing in it, or sowing as you put it.

Some folks have a problem with this point of view, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s true. I often tell folks if you’re unhappy with life and life’s circumstances, go look in the mirror. That’s a good place to start if you desire to change your life for the better.

I would also add that having “free will” is not a blessing if you can’t see or if you’re diluted, which most people are.

The choices people make are made without understanding or knowledge of reality can lead to some bad choices made out of ignorance — which to me is not freedom to make the right choices.

You must see and understand the good, the bad and the ugly to really make a free and unremembered choice about anything. That would be my definition of free will, which many don’t have access to unfortunately.

Their busy battling their demons instead of building a meaningful life and being confused and thrown off course because they don’t understand nor have the “free will” to make the choices that can change their life immediately.

Anyway, just my two cents Jk. Thank you for this getting us thinking with this post : )

I like that…the quality we’re currently experiencing is directly based on what we’ve created for ourselves. That’s like saying 1+1=2 [simple and true].

Good point. Free Will could be a blessing for some (who understand) and a curse for others (who are not willing to understand). Very good point!

Man, you brought the wisdom with this one Mark. I appreciate that. We’re cut from the same fabric; many of our views run parallel with one another. I don’t think it’s even a matter of being unquie..because this stuff is truly based on simplicity.

To me I think you have summed up the very essence of your post when you drew light to the importance of remembering to assess and celebrate our wins. These kind of actions are expressed as “gratitude”.

It takes of a lot of reprogramming from our societal conditioning that enabled us to bemoan our failures and blame others for them. However, I feel that to journey through this life with gratitude, means to BE thankful for the opportunities that come our way. Furthermore, I believe that even in the face of threats, there is an opportunity present that should be welcomed with thanksgiving. …sometimes, these kinds of opportunities are so darn hard to find! …nevertheless, they are there.

This post is a wonderful call to press onward to meet the goals of our personal/professional mission!

Gratitude is a must. I think we all get too caught up in the hustle and forget to celebrate the results. For the results is why we hustle…so when we get them we should take time and experience the gratitude. GOOD POINT!

And even if we don’t win – should be thankful that we got a shot.

Thank you for this Ajen…you’re wonderful with worlds!

JK, this was a big question for me so I let it settle for a while before I stepped up with a response. In truth there were many responses that came to mind but one kept on tapping me on the shoulder saying, “Hey Bud, I’m over here”. In the end I knew he was my guy to follow. Results, luck, lack of fortitude, etc become a message you put out by your wordly reaction to them – your own positive PR (or not). When you express your losses or lack of winning in a lesser way your body and language tell the world you’re just another run-of-the-mill person. But when you declare that you’re in it for the long run, that you are refining your purpose and honing your talent, and that you welcome setbacks as set too’s to what needs fixing, your PR speaks loud and proud. So when results don’t go your way, stand up, head up and speak tall and the world will hear you, see you, respect you, and talk about you in only the finest sense. Show them EVERYTHING you’ve got! Record breakers first have to learn to face their dream breakers on the way up.

Hi John,

I’m glad you took some time to think on this one John, because what resulted from your marinating, was a masterfully crafted and value rich comment.

I loved the closing..

“Record breakers first have to learn to face their dream breakers on the way up.”

We will fail. We will not always achieve exactly what we hope to. We can, but it’s not promised to happen in any number of attempts. Because of this, if we want something bad enough we have to be willing to stand tall through the trials and work until we get what we’re after.

Your comment was flat-out awesome John – thank you sir!

I say fail and fail some more.

One of the best ways I’m held accountable is through my three mastermind groups. When I announce my intentions to 9 or 10 other people, I am extremely motivated to deliver. Excuses don’t get the job done. We don’t do to-do lists, those are a given. We commit to big actions.

Glad you motivated yourself JK! One of the perks of writing a blog:)

Hi There Theresa!

3 mastermind groups. Oh my! You’re a serious lady aren’t you!

I’m with you – I think there’s an element of power that responsible people have when they announce their goals. It’s an accountability holder for us. Some people keep things within so no one can hold them accountable for their actions.

Yeah, the self motivation is pretty cool… I do it big time in the gym when working out!

I hope your week is going well Theresa – take care!

Jk, first time commenter here! Enjoyed this first post I read here!

I learned only recently that I am 100% accountable for my life. I can’t blame anyone else for the situation I’m in. After realizing that opened my eyes to making a better life for myself. So instead of sitting around and waiting for things to come to me, I’m taking more action. I wish I learned that 10 years ago.

Hey Benny,
Welcome to HN! I appreciate you sliding through, reading and taking the time to comment.

Well Benny, I like you wish I would have picked up on some life lessons much earlier in life. But at the end of the day – at least we’re starting to get it now…right!

I appreciate your comment sir! Have a great weekend.

Jk,

“The only break that may happen is your own heart” – that is true and it cracked me up. But you illustrate a great point here that we should be holding ourselves accountable.

I look at it this way: this moment, as in right now, I’m taking stock of everything in my life. I’m thinking deeply about my circumstance. Taking it all in; relationships, business, health and fitness, all of it. How did I get here?

That’s easy. “Now” is the product of every decision that I made, no matter how small, day in and day out each day of my life until this very moment. I steered myself here.

So to answer your question about steps I take to help me get/stay on track, that’s it. I remind myself that I am the architect here. If I don’t want to feel disappointed later then I better make great decisions now.

Thanks, my friend, for a wonderful article.

Thanks right Jon – we have to hold ourselves accountable. Is that too much to ask for! I mean, if we really want it, we have to be wiling to really get it. I know it’s easy theoretically to understand, and requires a lot of work, but that’s the price that life has put on it. It is what it is!

Reminding ourselves that we call many of the shots is a great way to keep on top of our game.

You’re always on top of yours, from my perspective.

PEACE

As Einsten said, success is 1 percent luck and 99% hard-work so it is obvious that if want to success, we should really work hard.

They said, you are in-charge in your actions. You must know what will be the result if you choose your own decision. Make sure that your decision will be good for you. Thanks for the blog, btw.
