From Hustler…to Hustler/Author: An Introduction to My First Published Book

Post image for From Hustler…to Hustler/Author: An Introduction to My First Published Book

I had the wonderful pleasure of attending the Miami International Book Fair a week ago with Nick Kent (Art Director) of Mind Adventure, Inc. The experience was one of a kind; one that I’ll always remember; one that was life impacting. This book fair symbolized a new adventure in my life…one that brought confirmation and clarity to a long term aspiration: becoming an author.

A Different Kind of Hustler Publication!

Rob White (remember: Learning from a Multi-millionaire) invited me to attend the book fair along with the Mind Adventure team acouple months ago. Rob and team were headed out to promote his newest book: Marvelous Denials and Wonderful Obsessions. A few weeks or so after the invite, I received another call from Rob raising the stakes … he not only wanted me to attend the book fair to consume and enjoy the unique experience, but to attend as a published author to capture a fuller essence of the energy–one that only an author can experience.

I was all for it! I went to work immediately identifying the best content from here, The Hustler’s Notebook that would make up the greater portion of my soon-to-be book. As I worked to edit the articles and get them book-ready, Nick worked his magic on creating the design, formatting and layout of the book.

Book Title.  Driven to Learn, Learning to Win: The Evolution of a Hustler

What this title means to me is huge. Driven to Learn signifies my willingness and commitment to personal development. And not just development, but to learn from the many lessons that life presents me through people and situations. Learning to Win is a testament to the results that I plan on getting in life, and the persistence needed to get those wins.  And lastly, The Ev0lution of a Hustler speaks about my personal evolution from where I was >> where I am now  >> and where I’m going.

Off To Miami

The dwindling of months, weeks, days and hours that led up to my flight to Miami compounded my excitement. I wasn’t a tad bit nervous …more so anxious to meet the team and selfishly to meet my first publication.

I was so excited I even bought some Nikes with Mind Adventure branded 0range. Nick told me that I had an orange shirt to wear so i had to coordinate! ;)

^Jk | Nick^

The bulk of my excitement was the opportunity to finally meet Rob in person. We’ve really gotten to know each over the past 14 months or so and finally it was our time to meet in person. Well, so we thought.

Unfortunately, due to a couple of circumstances he wasn’t able to attend the book fair. It was a bummer, but it didn’t ruin the trip. Nope, the mission remained sturdy. Days prior to departure to Miami, Rob shared what our trip was about; and it wasn’t just about selling books.

The Mission was to attend the book fair to SHARE OUR SPECIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE with others, without the thought of gain.

First Book Sold

“Who wrote this one”, a passerby asked.

“I’m the author of that book”, I quickly replied with a smile. I proceeded to tell the kind lady what the book meant to me and what subjects were covered in it. Our conversation ended with the purchase of  not one, but two copies of Driven.

At that very moment…after the purchase of my first couple of books, I felt a huge concoction of appreciation, gratitude, understanding, and drive. At that point, I knew I had more titles ahead me and I was only getting started.

Selling and signing books was fun. It was exceptionally fulfilling in instances I gave books away to those that that formed a connection with the book but weren’t in a position to purchase one.

Taking Action

I talk about taking action a lot. It’s been my personal theme for 2011 and will be even more so in 2012. I sat around and thought about the successes that I’ve wanted in life for too long…thinking that they might magically appear. Until I started applying some action to those thoughts, I was just thinking up great ideas but never experiencing them.

I mention this because sometimes the thought of an uncomfortable situation can hold you back. When I first got to the book fair reality hit…”I’m in the midst of action. I’m here to really do something, not just sit around and think about it or hope for it…I’m experiencing and acting upon my thoughts.”

A Milestone That Couldn’t be Held Back

About one year ago, I shared with several people a major goal of mine for 2011 was to have a book published. Shortly after the start of the year, I made some adjustments to my goals because I believed that I had possibly bitten off more than I could actually chew.

Well I’ve come to learn that some things are meant to happen. Having a book published was the first goal I scratched off of my list. But what do you know…That goal couldn’t be eliminated. Even after removing it from my goal list it constantly lingered in my mind. I continued to write blog posts that I thought were chapter worthy. And then, what seemed to be out of nowhere, Rob graciously extended an extremely generous offer to sponsor my first publication. He had no clue that having a book published had been a 2011 goal of mine.

A HUGE Thanks to Rob and Nick (Mind Adventure, Inc.)

Not only did Rob totally sponsor the publication for my book (design, format, print coordinating, etc. – all completed by Nick), but he also paid for my trip (flight, hotel, etc.). This trip taught me something that I’ll never forget. It was a great lesson of generosity and it  reminded me why I aim to become financially wealthy: so that I can one day bless someone else, as Rob has blessed me.

But even more that the monetary aspects, Rob’s mentorship has taken me from just a thinker…to a do’er. From a doubter…to a believer. From a know it all…to a student. From a hustler…to a hustler/author!

I’m Driven to Learn and Learning to Win. This IS the Evolution of a Hustler.

Want a Book?

I write as a hobby, and never seen myself writing a book. Is it that difficult? I think what’s really holding me back is this–what if the book doesn’t sell?

Reply

Jk Allen

Hi Jim,

I believe if you can write as a hobby, then you can certainly write a book.

I understand your disposition in the idea that the book may not sell. But I suggest thinking about it from the other end…the more positive note. What if you write a best seller?

Best of luck…and I hope you take action and make it happen.

Jk, it’s no cliche to say that if anyone was to write this book it was you. It’s got your desire, focus, hunger, persistence, and work ethic all over it. Even from this far I can feel the energy of accomplishment and the power of purpose. You don’t do telepathy do you? You do prediction though because you said it was going to happen and here it is which speaks volumes of the message you’ve always advocated – hustle and effort and dedication to the cause produces results. And I predict it’s going to be one monster of a result! Because you’ve done it for real and lead the way.

Hello John,

Thank you for the complementary words of encouragement. I certainly have worked my butt off this year and it does feel good to be able to match my effort with my accomplishments…but to be honest – that’s usually the formula…we get what we give.

I’ll keep yo updated on the results from the book.

PS – I’ve been keeping up with your posts from my phone mostly…just haven’t had much time to get out in the blogosphere…but you’ll see me soon!

Yes, it is a great feeling, as I’m sure you know. In fact, I recently whipped out Getting Results the Agile Way to brush up my project manager skills. I’m a Google Apps Deployment PM (for a google partner) in my day job.

Looks like you have a Getting Results ebook available on your site…I’m looking forward to reading it.

Congratulations J.K.!!! What an awesome accomplishment!
And I love how you described that moment when you realize that you’re actually doing it. I’ve had that moment several times (and am going through another one just now!) and you can plan all you want. When it comes time to actually put that plan into action, you’re going to have to work hard not to poo your pants. :)

I don’t mean this in a condescending way, but I’m really proud of you!

Hi Melody,

You made me chuckle (and I don’t even use that word) twice in your witty comment. “poo your pants” and especially “Super duper double chocolate puppy hugs). I just chuckled again writing it!

When I was sitting there and realized that I was there…I was living my very thoughts…it was very moving. It brought a lot of clarity to me and what I want to experience next.

Take care , Melody.

Hi Jk.

You are a gift to me. Part of the spiritual realm of living (the most important realm of being), is to GIVE BACK. What greater pleasure could I get than to give to someone who acts on what is offered, and expresses sincere appreciation for the opportunities it brings.

You embraced my offer to help you go to the Miami International Book Fair with your own published book, and you lived wholly in the consciousness of doing your part to make it happen. How could it miss? IT COULDN’T!

blessings

The ideal state of reality manifests our deepest dreams. You dreamt of having a published book in 2011. I did not consciously know that (although, like-kind minds mingle, so I was aware of it at a deeper level of mind). From this successful experience you are recalled to the fact that when you act from your ‘highest self’, the the grand truth is revealed: Any concept your mind can create, and you are willing to unwaveringly believe, you shall achieve. That’s fun, isn’t it Jk.

You have now reached the ‘Causal Realm’ of existence; it gives a whole new meaning to the ‘Abstract Realm’ of mind. True answers dwell on the ‘Causal Realm’. You now are able to rid yourself of any fears that answers to one’s highest aspirations may not exist – they do exist!

I was just thinking a moment ago on how much you prepped me for the trip to Miami. You really set that trip up to be a very successful one for me. I kept receiving flashes of your advice; advice that you gave me on the phone days before the trip that awakened me in certain situations. It’s hard for me to explain it…but I just thought about that. It’s almost like bits of your advice sat in my head awaiting to flash when I came into contact with certain situations. It’s amazing!

Thank you so much for the opportunity, belief and generosity.

CONGRATULATIONS JK!

I can totally remember the mail we shared in December last year about our aspirations to author a book this year. I am so happy you were able to pull it through. It’s true how some dreams won’t go away no matter how hard we try to make them go, some words or thoughts carelessly conceived are seeds that grow into trees.

This is a whole new level for you and I am so positive you will climb higher. By next year, hopefully, I should be playing in this level too -the author’s circle :)

Congrats James, you so deserve it!

First off, Congrats!! I have been… I am… overly super excited for you! I can think of no one more deserving of such an awesome achievement. You are truly an inspiration to me, my friend. Thank you for allowing me into your life; so that I could witness this awesome feeling that you’re sharing here with your readers.

The things you’ve done for me without me even having to ask, says a lot about the man behind the “hustle”. Then, whenever I do happen to ask it’s done before I even get the question out. You know what that tells me; that tells me that I’m connected to someone with a huge heart! Someone who knows what true friendship means.

You also introduced me to Rob; the both of you are truly awesome men! And now, thank you for the introduction to Nick too.The three of you inspire me daily in some way; and encourage me to keep going in the direction that I’m headed. You through the convo, and Rob and Nick through the “180″ experience. For that I am totally grateful to have the connection of three other men filled with character, talented gifts, and integrity.

Man, I am very proud you. Keep doing what you do, my friend. You haven’t even begun to tap into the blessings laid up for you. Go get them all! :)

But his uniqueness makes him a powerful inspirationalist and makes you want to take action. Nick has an fantastic gift of making what could be complex, simple to understand through is ability to illustrate like no other. Powerful team they are.

Hey Jeremy,

When we put our mind to work, and our action in the same direction- we really start to make the progress that we envision. Without the action, our thoughts are just good thoughts. That’s I’m coming to learn more and more. That’s the separator between the people that always seem to win, and the people who only have the best intentions to win. There’s a very distinct difference.

Thanks for the kind words J. Looking forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Hi JK,

So glad to read from The Hustler again. I have mentioned to Rob White before that there are 3 bloggers that are mandatory reading for me these days. That’s you, Rob and Adrienne Smith. I know you guys are all busy, but i can’t tell you how much each post of yours mean to me. I find inspiration and a never say die attitude in all your readings.

Just like this post have reminded me of my goal of having a book published by the end of this year. The year is still not over yet. Hence I still have sometime right? I have actually written quite a bit already, but have kinda stop. Now you gave me great impulse to finish what I have started. Perhaps that’s a good Christmas and New Year gift for myself. Just wondering if you could be one of those who could briefly review my book when it’s done.

BTW, how can I get hold of your book? I am in Singapore, 13000 miles away.

Hi JK,

This is awesome. Congratulations. Having a book published is also one of my goals for 2012. My book will be a different kind of book, a novel. To me, publishing a book sounds kind of scary. And that’s mostly based upon that the product is finished, you can’t go back and make it even better after you’ve published it. Once you publish, it’s out there. It’s so much easier online, with blog posts end ebooks, where we can discuss and make adjustments after they bought it, and even edit and send them new versions (by using an email list).

What’s your thoughts on this, was it scary at first, or just all fun?

Reply

Jk Allen

Hey there Jens,

For me, the process was very confirming in a number of ways. I didn’t get caught up in the idea of perfection because when I do that I get paralyzed by the “not good enough” bug. Instead, I respected how big of an opportunity it was and thought about how much value my book offers; for it’s a collection of thoughts that took me 30 years to build.

It’s also confirming in a sense that yes, once published, it’s published – can’t go back and hit backspace at all. But I think that’s also what brings about a confirming feeling of excitement and thrill – because it’s final, unless you go back to print with another edited edition.

Best of luck to accomplishing your goal of having your novel published in 2012.
When that happens, I look forward to purchasing and reading it!

Take care sir.

Congratulations JK. What a monumental achievement! From one who’s been there, I can attest that there is no feeling quite like holding a book in your hands with your own words printed inside. Even if you’ve written thousands of words on a blog or website, there is something about seeing them binded together. Neil Simon (writer of “The Odd Couple,” “Barefoot in the Park,” etc.) once said that one of the greatest joys in the universe was hearing his own dialogue spoken by actors on a stage. I think you’re likely experiencing some of this now. It’s kind of surreal. At any rate, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. I will be soon.

So happy to hear that you had your book published too and the fact that it was all sponsored by Rob was truly a blessing! Definitely getting my copy man! I want to be able to say that I supported you as a first time author when your a big name and have 5, 10 or 15 New York Times best-sellers!

I want you to know that this was truly motivating for me and I cant wait to release my book and get it published as well!

It could be a nice pleasure to sign your own book. And it was surely a markable thing too, when you sold your first book. This book fair must have been an experience which you’ll never forget. And your sneakers:) I love them! nice choice;)

That is so awesome, Jk! I’m glad you are growing and writing! I hope you never stop. I know how hard and time consuming writing a book is, but if you love it, you tend to write and the time just flies by. I look forward to hearing more about how you are reaching people through your book.

Hi JK,

congratulations on your first book, having written a couple I know what a great feeling it is to write a book. It sounds like all the usual complexities of finding an agent, publisher etc were taken away from you as you seem to have had good counsel via your contacts.

Out of interest, did you consider self-publishing at any stage or go straight for a publisher – also is there an e-book version?

and now you’ve got the bug have you started your 2nd book?

Congratulations on your writing a book and successfully sold the first copy. It seems nice that you interacted with your readers in the book fair. I like your mission of sharing special skills and knowledge with others. Good luck with your book.

I got a new name for you . . .

JK – The Bigga Figga!

Maybe you remember JT – The Bigga Figga from over there in the Western Bay – Fillmore, if memory serves correct. I didn’t like his lyrics all that much but he definitely produced some smooth beats. And that’s the connection I make with you and him – producers.

Congratulations on meeting this goal and moving on up in the world using the content you created while “Dwelling In The Lab (my fav album of JT’s)” that is your office and compiling your hits into a published work!

But I think the biggest accomplishment is not just in the book itself, but that you’ve made something possible in your mind that was once impossible. You’ve just pioneered a new path in your potential and this is MUCH more valuable than all the money this book will ever bring you. Overcoming our own mental road blocks is THE only way we evolve to becoming a bigger figure in our own mind as well as the minds of others and stacking bigger figures to stash under our mattress. :) I commend you for taking actions that are moving you forward on the path to doing both.

Wow, how amazing it must have felt to publish your very own book. That is really very impressive. I can’t wait to grab myself a copy and learn your thoughts. I would be very proud myself, if I manage to publish one. I hope you continue writing and wish you publish more of your works.

Hi JK,

In my opinion, the greatest thing a person can do in the making of their success is to bring others along with them. You clearly have an “We can all make it!” attitude. Be as proud of that as you are of your new book. Keep Hustlin’!

Jk,

Congratulations on achieving a major event in your life. Years later, when we’re old and grey, I can imagine you telling your grandchildren about the time when you stood at that bookfair, talking to the kind lady who made the decision to grant you your first sales. A special day, I’m sure, and one that deserves to be held in recognition.

You, my friend, have accomplished something immense. You have achieved a slice of heaven.

Best wishes to the rest of your ‘authorial journey’, and I hope many more good times come your way :-)

Jk, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that your personal theme this year has been taking action and having the success you’ve had. I just write for fun at the moment, but I’m inspired by what you’ve achieved to take things further, the appreciation you felt after selling your first books must have made all the hard work worth it.

It’s also nice to see how you recognise the help that Rob has given you and have made a mental note to pass on that generosity when you’re in a position to do so.
